According to an official statement issued by Georgia’s Civil Aviation Agency, the expanded sanctions list announced by the United States includes airlines that currently operate air services between Georgia and Iran.
The agency says that, as in previous cases, Georgia will act in full compliance with the international sanctions regime.
What does Georgia’s Civil Aviation Agency say?
The Civil Aviation Agency states that Georgia actively observes and ensures compliance with sanctions imposed by its international partners, including in the aviation sector.
When granting foreign airlines access to the Georgian aviation market, the country is guided by national legislation, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, as well as bilateral and multilateral international agreements.
Georgia also takes into account the sanctions mechanisms established by the European Union and the United States.
How does Georgia monitor sanctioned airlines?
According to the Civil Aviation Agency, Georgia has for years used sanctions lists administered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, as an additional monitoring mechanism.
These include the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List (SDN List) and other sanctions lists administered by OFAC.
The agency notes that Georgia has previously restricted the operations of several airlines under this mechanism.
