Daily passenger rail service between Georgia and Azerbaijan will resume, with the first train scheduled for May 26, according to the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

The ministry said the service, which had been suspended in 2020 due to pandemic-related restrictions, will return to regular operation following an agreement on strengthening strategic partnership and regional cooperation between the two countries.

Officials noted that the resumption of rail traffic is particularly important as the land border between the two countries has not been open for passenger movement for the past six years. In this context, the railway connection is expected to serve as a key alternative to existing air travel, improving mobility and connectivity.

According to the statement, the restored service is expected to facilitate tourism, trade, and broader economic ties. Azerbaijan remains one of Georgia’s traditional tourism markets, and the renewed connection is expected to increase visitor flows, benefiting hospitality businesses and regional economies along the route.

The ministry added that the reactivation of regular passenger rail transport will further strengthen people-to-people contacts and underline regional stability and readiness to provide modern transport services in the South Caucasus.
